Watch Out, These Kids Can Work!!
Learn how to provide students with the opportunity to learn through work experience in this session. Our district's Elementary STEAM Club students and Middle School Volunteer STEAM Lab Workers have established themselves by accomplishing projects in years past. Observing the younger students create items for the older students and adults in the district and community is fun to watch. They take great pride in their work. This year, we introduced a Work Order board where staff members fill out a form, and students select the order to work on and complete it by the designated date. This approach helps students gain skills and experiences that will be useful throughout their lives. This allows students to tackle and solve problems that they could face in the real world, empowers students to apply classroom learning to real-life situations, and engages them in Service learning to help their local needs.

Lunch & Keynote: STEM Principles Beyond STEM Professions
In today's rapidly evolving world, it's crucial to equip students with competencies that transcend specific professions, such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. STEM education plays a pivotal role in fostering an innovative culture by igniting curiosity and addressing pressing global challenges, yet there remains a significant shortage of professionals, especially among women and minorities. Introducing children to STEM disciplines at an early age can help promote diversity and representation in these fields, bridging existing gaps. While not everyone may opt for a career in STEM, its principles are widespread, emphasizing the importance of understanding the world around us. STEM not only prepares students for future careers but also equips them with crucial problem-solving skills to tackle complex issues effectively and the ability to persist in the face of failure, ensuring a brighter and more inclusive future for all.

Short on time but still what to teach a quality STEM challenge with your K-5 students? Look no further. Mrs. VB will show you how to plan a lesson in no time.
I have been teaching in the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek School District for 31 years. For the previous eight years, I have filled the role of the STEM teacher for our kindergarten through fifth-grade students. I convinced my district to create a STEM program for our youngest learners, but I needed to develop the curriculum from scratch. I quickly realized that many of the "STEM"-labeled lessons found on the internet, such as on TPT,  were not truly STEM at all. Many were simply science experiments or teacher-directed activities. I believe that a true STEM challenge encourages students to think like engineers and solve a novel problem. STEM develops problem-solving skills and builds creativity. Students need to the Engineering Design Process with every STEM lesson in order to advance their ability to use it independently in both the academic environment as well as their personal lives. In this session, I will share many of my challenge lessons that you will be able to explore and implement in your classroom. We will discuss what makes a high-quality challenge as well as some of the tips and tricks that I have learned in my journey as a STEM educator.

Resources Provided: Several lessons to use in their classroom and access to new lessons as I create them.
